What is the difference between PTE and IELTS?

IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is a test conducted by IDP Education, British Council and Cambridge English Language Assessment. The test has the purpose to certify and test the proficiency of non- native English speakers.

PTE or The Pearson Test of English is considered one the latest testing systems for certifying the English language level of proficiency of non-native English speakers.  IELTS is one of the most popular testing systems and the majority of American, Australian and European universities accept it. But, also the PTE test is recognised in universities from different states and the number of people who take increases daily.

What is the difference between the test versions?

Both tests have some common versions, an academic one and a general one. The academic version is designed for the persons who plan to apply to a foreign university, but also for non-academic purposes. The general version of the tests is used to certify people’s realistic communication skills. And there is another version designed for the young learners, called the Young Learner test and it measures children’s communication skills.

Tests structure and content

PTE and IELTS have similar test sections when it comes to Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. However, every one of them also has unique features and this is what it differentiates one from another. If you will take the IELTS, then you should expect the examiner to evaluate your speaking abilities by a live conversation, which will be recorded on a recording device. If you take the PTE, then you will not have to get involved into a live conversation, you will have to speak to a microphone and you will be recorded by a computerised system. A computer program will be used to evaluate your speaking abilities and to rate you. The writing section of the IELTS exam implies a completely paper based chart, graph or diagram, but the PTE is totally computer based, and this means that it will use innovative techniques to test your writing capabilities. When it comes to IELTS you will have a set time for every one of the papers, and you can move forward and backward, but if you choose to take a PTE exam, you should know that it has section timings and this means that you can move only forward.
